Ann Weiser Cornell, Ph.D. was studying linguistics on a Woodrow Wilson Fellowship at the University of Chicago in 1972 when she met Eugene Gendlin, the originator of Focusing. Learning Focusing for her own personal growth led to a lifelong process of discovery.
In 1980, Eugene Gendlin invited Ann to assist with his Focusing workshops. Ann created one of the first workshops in Focusing guiding in 1982, and today is internationally recognized as one of the leading innovators and theoreticians of Focusing. She has taught Focusing in fourteen states and seventeen countries, and her Focusing books and manuals have been translated into six other languages.
In 1990, Ann became the first person to support herself full-time as a Focusing teacher. She has been invited to teach twelve times in the Netherlands, eleven times in Germany, five times in Japan, and in 13 other countries. She has a special interest in making the Focusing process clear and accessible to anyone.
People often remark on the relaxed atmosphere of Ann’s groups, growing out of her cheerful, warm, humorous approach. She has a special talent at helping people feel at ease with each other in groups. Her special interests these days include: finding treasure in making decisions, releasing blocks to action, helping therapists learn facilitative language to support Focusing in their clients, Focusing alone (solo Focusing), and changing our relationship with an inner critic.
Ann is well-known in the Focusing world for her attention to the language that facilitates Focusing, her popular manuals, and her co-creation with Barbara McGavin of Treasure Maps to the Soul, a body of work applying Focusing to difficult areas such as addiction, depression, action blocks, self-criticism, and unfulfilled desire. She is the author of two books on Focusing: her bestseller The Power of Focusing, and her latest book The Radical Acceptance of Everything: Living a Focusing Life.
Ann is authorized by the Focusing Institute in New York to offer the Institute's certification as Focusing Trainer. In 1984 she started The Focusing Connection, the first newsletter connecting the international community of focusers.
