Level One Focusing Training
Are you determined to resolve what’s in the way of your own growth and the life you know is possible?
You CAN be the one in charge of your change process… and your change process can build on your strengths, help you be stronger, calmer, more able to deal with your life.
Does this sound like you?
You feel blocked in moving forward with your life…
You feel you are sometimes your own worst enemy…
You struggle with decisions because you don’t know what YOU want…
Your past holds you back but trying to just “let go” isn’t working…
… and it feels like you’ve been searching forever for something that really works to bring change to your life.
Are you tired of paying for workshops or people to help you change, yet not feeling that YOU are in charge of the process? Are you determined to find a way to heal the hurts of the past that leaves you stronger instead of pathologizing you?
(And if you’re a healing professional helping others, are you tired of methods that don’t work to give your clients the results you know are possible?)
Click here to find out if you share some of these common disappointments when trying to find a change process that works. (You won’t be taken to a new page, you’ll just see more words on this one.)
- You felt better in the practitioner’s office or at the end of the workshop but your life didn’t really change.
- You got the feeling that your opinions and values weren’t really being taken into account.
- There was more emphasis on what was wrong with you than on your strengths and potentials.
- You didn’t get emotionally stronger… on the contrary, you felt weaker and smaller.
- You didn’t learn a process you could use on your own.
- You weren’t the one in charge of the process that was happening.
- The process didn’t make sense or you didn’t understand how it was supposed to work.
It doesn’t have to be that way!
After trying all those things you’re still feeling that uneasy gap between how your life is right now and what you know is your potential. You’re still feeling plagued by inner critics nagging you to do more, or indulge less… You know that more is possible for you, to live the life you were born to live, to be as big as the world needs you to be. But how to get there?
Wouldn’t it be great to have a process for change that really works, that YOU can learn, that YOU can have with you every day of your life, for yourself, for family and friends? You can.
A program for change needs five components to be truly effective.
- It needs to be experiential and include lots of practice so you can feel the practical results immediately in your own life.
- It needs to be respectful of your strengths and aimed at growing your core ability to be calm, strong, and compassionate toward yourself.
- It needs to be body-based and here-and-now oriented, so you are grounded in reality and every stage is “checkable” with your actual experience.
- It needs to be accessible and affordable with no huge travel costs or big time commitments.
- And above all, it needs to be effective, to really work.
Inner Relationship Focusing is a powerful and natural process for positive life change.
Hi, I’m Ann Weiser Cornell, and I’ve been teaching and developing IR Focusing training programs since 1985. I created these programs because I saw people struggling with procrastination and action blocks, sinking under low self-esteem and severe inner criticism, having a hard time feeling grounded and making confident decisions, and most of all longing to live the fulfilling lives they knew they could live but never quite getting there.
I know how painful that is because it was like that for me. I had such a big writer’s block, I felt like I was encased in cement. I could procrastinate for months on the most important things. I was working way below my potential, and beat myself up internally for it every day. I looked everywhere, tried everything, every process for change I heard about from friends or in books. Nothing really worked.
I kept coming back to Focusing – which was actually the first change process I learned, when I was just 22 years old. It probably saved my life back then – but there were also things that were missing. (That’s why I kept looking elsewhere.)
My life finally started to turn around when I began to bring the best of what I had learned from other methods back to the Focusing process. I joined forces with Barbara McGavin and we went deeply into the philosophical roots of Focusing to find what really makes it work and re-create it from the ground up. We called the result Inner Relationship Focusing, or IRF , and began to teach it all over the world.
Since 1992 we’ve been creating quiet miracles by teaching people the Inner Relationship
Focusing process and we’d like to include you in that, by inviting you to take Level One
Focusing, the first course in our Focusing Training Program.
And since we now teach the Focusing Training Program by phone seminar, you
don’t have to leave the comfort of your home or office in order to take courses
that used to be offered only in a few locations in the world.
All you need is a phone, no special equipment, though a hands-free headset is helpful.
Yes, you can even call with a cell phone or Skype, as long as the line is reasonably clear.
When you register, you’ll receive a special number to call,
and your own PIN code. You’ll be on a conference call with the
teacher, the assistants, and a group of friendly fellow students. The teacher will be
able to moderate the call from a master control panel. There will be lectures,
demonstrations, question periods, group exercises, and paired exercises. We’ve been
doing phone seminars since 2003 and we’re old hands at it – and they work
amazingly well.

What will you receive from taking the IR Focusing Training Program?
- a practical, step-by-step method for starting with any problem or stuck situation and finding relief, insight, and new steps of action, so you feel bigger than your problems and in control of your life
- a revolutionary way to access your body’s wisdom – so you can get in touch with rich information about your life and your life’s direction that you already know without knowing you know
- a simple but powerful listening process that lets you be supportive of other people – and yourself – in ways that are literally the opposite of interfering and giving advice, so your relationships open up
- a structured plan for moving forward and taking the lessons beyond the course into your daily life so you feel empowered to take your life into the areas you’ve always dreamed of
This is more than just help with one problem. (If that’s all you want, one-to-one sessions would be a better choice for you.) This is learning a process that you can use with any problem or issue, now or in the future, for the rest of your life.
A Not-Very-Well-Kept Secret: As you’ve long suspected, it’s not really about getting past problems. It’s really about how it feels to be you, living your life, moment by moment. Imagine the possibility that life could feel wonderful – a steady feeling of ease, aliveness, spaciousness… that it feels good to be you. Wouldn’t that be great?
What the class actually includes:
- Five three-hour meetings for an effective total of 15 hours of class time. (There will be a 15-minute break about halfway through each class.)
- Your own copy of The Focusing Student’s and Companion’s Manual mailed to you in time for the start of class, and also available by download if you register late or live far away. (And it will still come in the mail.)
- Unique “crib cards” for every paired class exercise so you know exactly what to do to make the exercises most effective for yourself and your partner. (We innovated these crib cards and they really work.)
- A “seating chart” with photos of the teacher, the assistants, and your fellow students so you can connect names with faces and you’re not just hearing voices in the dark. (We’ll ask you to send your own photo and we’ll help you do that if you’re not sure how.)
- Access to recordings of every class as mp3 downloads up to 60 days after the end of the class, so you’ll be able to listen again to anything you want to hear twice – or over and over again.
- A private web page where you can access homework, recordings, and other important class information from any web browser.
- Email and/or phone support from the teacher and the class assistants if you have questions between the class meetings or need extra help.
Yes, that’s a lot! We really want this course to work for you, so are always thinking of what else we can do to enhance your experience. Which brings me to the pre-requisite…
Prerequisite: at least one individual session with an Inner Relationship Focusing teacher. This session prepares you to get the most out of the class. It's recommended to have your session with Lucinda Hayden, the teacher of the course. Right now we are offering a special discount: your first session with Lucinda for just $95, a savings of $55. You will be able to sign up when you click the ADD TO CART button for a Level One Focusing class. Or if you prefer you can come back to this page any time up to a week before your class and pay the $95 with the PayPal link.
The Fee
The cost of the Level One Focusing course is $275 until 10 days before the course begins (then the fee goes up to $295). Registration closes on the Wednesday before Monday and Tuesday classes, and on the Monday before Wednesday and Thursday classes, so it pays to plan ahead.
Levels Two, Three, and Four cost $295 each. But if you know you’d like to take the whole training, you can pay for a package of Levels Two, Three, and Four for $765, just $255 each, a savings of $120. (This payment is refundable and unused portions of it are also refundable, if you decide not to take the courses.)
Our Schedule
Here are the Level One courses we have currently scheduled. We typically offer the Level One course seven times a year. Two of those are especially for Healing Professionals, and the rest of them anyone can join. We offer courses on different times and days to make them more available to more people. We usually post courses here on the website about four months in advance. If you have a request for a time or day for a future course, do email us to let us know.

Read what Jill said about how IR Focusing training has changed her life:
“I used to experience painful depressions that I felt I had little control over. I haven't experienced depression since learning Focusing.
“I had trouble handling disagreement and differences of opinion. I listen to others with greater caring now, and am enjoying all my relationships more.
“Before Focusing, my husband and I often had painful, confusing conflict. My marriage is now the joy that I want it to be.
“It used to be hard for me to know what I was feeling, because there was so much I was on the verge of knowing about myself that I was afraid to know. Now, I can turn toward all that. I have the ability to notice feelings of all kinds, and relate to them in a friendly way that helps them relax and reveal what is important in them.
“I often experienced emotions that would escalate and ‘take over.’ I was easily hurt and upset, and these feelings would last for days or weeks. Now I can pause, notice an inner reaction to some situation, and take good care of my emotions so they don't have to escalate to get my attention.
“Other people used to see me as volatile, moody, blowing hot and cold. Now, people see me as calm and even-keeled. And in a surprising way, I am more expressive as well.
“I used to be very hard on myself, believing I had to be perfect, and berating myself for my failures. I now have a much more compassionate relationship with myself, owning (and cherishing) my own humanness and imperfectness.
“Fears of not measuring up kept me from doing many things that expressed my values and interests. I am now moving forward in some important areas. Without forcing myself, I am taking steps that feel right.
“At one point in my life, I truly thought there was something essentially defective about me. Now I feel so......well, human. And joined in that humanity by everyone else.”
