Feel like your problems have no clear answers?

Now's the time to try Focusing. It's about paying attention, but not in the way that you think...

Let us show you a skill called Focusing.

To us, Focusing is more than just paying attention to the task at hand. The kind of Focusing we teach is a respectful, mind-body awareness method that helps you find greater ease, clarity, and freedom from old emotional patterns.

Focusing is a process for change that really works! Over 50 research studies have linked Focusing with positive outcomes in therapy including greater emotional regulation, more satisfying relationships, and increased self acceptance. You don’t need a therapist to learn Focusing, we can teach you. And the best part: it’s a skill that YOU can learn, that YOU can have with you every day of your life!

And if you’ve dipped into mindfulness, you’ll learn that Focusing is mindfulness and more. Focusing encourages you to engage with feelings that come up when you sense inwardly. With this type of attention, your emotions get what they need in order to transform. We’ll show you how even your most difficult emotions can be sources of positive change and growth.

With our Focusing Training Program, we’ll teach you all about the wisdom of the body and how it can help you. Learn how you’re your own best resource when it comes to solving problems and getting clear on what you really need and want. Start living your fullest life with Focusing. Read on to learn more about Focusing and how our training puts you in charge of your life.

How Focusing Helped Jill…

JillDrummond - Small“I used to experience painful depressions that I felt I had little control over. I haven’t experienced depression since learning Focusing. I had trouble handling disagreement and differences of opinion. I listen to others with greater caring now, and am enjoying all my relationships more.

Before Focusing, my husband and I often had painful, confusing conflict. My marriage is now the joy that I want it to be. It used to be hard for me to know what I was feeling, because there was so much I was on the verge of knowing about myself that I was afraid to know. Now, I can turn toward all that.

I used to be very hard on myself, believing I had to be perfect, and berating myself for my failures. I now have a much more compassionate relationship with myself, owning (and cherishing) my own humanness and imperfectness.”

Jill Drummond, Manalapan, New Jersey

Where Did Focusing Come From?

Focusing was discovered in the late 1950s when Professor Eugene Gendlin of the University of Chicago researched the question: “Why is psychotherapy helpful for some people, but not others?”

He and his colleagues studied tapes of hundreds of therapy sessions and made a fascinating and important discovery: successful therapy clients did something more than just have thoughts and emotions about their problems. They would pause and pay attention to the immediate “feel” of the problem, often in a way that words could not easily convey. Gendlin called this a “felt sense,” and developed the method he called “Focusing” so that anyone could learn this profound way of having life-changing breakthroughs.

Gendlin collaborated with Carl Rogers to bring Focusing into Client-Centered Psychotherapy back in the 1950s. Gendlin also worked with Ann Weiser Cornell, our founder, to make Focusing accessible to anyone, whether they were in therapy or not.

How Do I Learn Focusing?

Learn Focusing Online

We’ve been teaching our courses since 2003.

All you need is a phone, tablet, or computer and a comfortable place to sit! We offer our courses online to allow students to join from anywhere in the world.

Students can interact with the teacher by pressing a button to “raise their hand” when they have questions. We record the audio portion of the calls as well, so if you’d like to re-listen to something you missed, you can hear it again later.

We use Zoom, an online video conference platform, to connect you to other students and the teacher. Zoom is free and easy to use.

What Will I Get From Each Level?

Path to Lasting Change, Part One

 Level One:

Imagine that life could feel wonderful – a steady feeling of ease, aliveness, spaciousness… that it feels good to be you.

Level One is where the door opens, as you learn how to pause and deeply listen, and to come alive to new possibilities for your life.

Course Syllabus and Learning Objectives

Level One Course Lessons:

Class One: The Power of Presence: How to make a calm and compassionate space for what you feel and how to return to this calm state of Presence when life throws you off kilter.

Class Two: Felt Sensing: How to get below the repetitive stories you tell yourself about your life to the fresh “felt sense” where real change and breakthrough is possible.

Class Three: A Deeper Understanding: How to carry on an inner conversation, helping more insight and readiness to take action to emerge.

Class Four: The Power of Listening: How to tune out the distractions of life and truly listen to someone else –– in a way that allows the other person to do Focusing as well.

Class Five: You’re in Charge: How to make your own modifications in the Focusing process so that it works best for your style and timing.

By successfully completing this course, students will have:

  • a practical method to help you manage any problem
  • a way to get in touch with rich information about your life and your life’s direction
  • a simple but powerful listening process that lets you be supportive of other people – and yourself – in ways that will improve your relationships
  • a structured plan for taking these lessons beyond the course and into your daily life

Level Two Focusing

Level Two:

In Level Two you deepen your ability to be present for your own feelings, and to find productive forward steps when life gives you challenges.

Take Levels Two – Four at a discount. When you sign up for Level Two, you’ll see an option to add Levels Three and Four. More information on how course scheduling works can be found in the FAQ below.

Course Syllabus and Learning Objectives

Level Two Course Lessons:

Class One: Presence: You’ll learn practical skills for enhancing your calm, compassionate Presence — in Focusing and in your life.
Class Two: The Edge: You’ll open up your ability to stay “at the edge of the unknown,” where fresh possibilities emerge.
Class Three: Leading In: You’ll practice a powerful way to ground and center yourself so that Focusing goes even deeper.
Class Four: Advanced Listening: You’ll learn ways to help another person stay connected to the Focusing process.
Class Five: Advanced Focusing: You’ll discover some profound ways to radically accept every part of yourself.

By successfully completing this course, students will have:

  • more tips and practice in cultivating Self-in-Presence, the ability to be compassionately larger than your difficult emotions
  • a supported process for coming into body awareness at the start of the session, called “Leading In,” that you can give to and receive from your Focusing partner
  • support in getting the most out of your Focusing process, especially in the places where you know it could go further but it isn’t
  • “advanced listening” skills for helping your partner get a felt sense when starting with an issue, for helping your partner stay with the present moment, and more

Level Three Focusing

Level Three:

Level Three is about the deep structure of Focusing – a model for understanding and following any Focusing process, so you can better support Focusing in others or yourself.

“Level 3 was wonderful! The new content was very helpful and really deepened my Focusing process, though for me the real joy was just in the simple fact of being in a (virtual) classroom with a group of like-minded people all keen to learn about Focusing.” – Simon, Japan

Course Syllabus and Learning Objectives

Level Three Course Lessons:

Class One: Self Guiding: Did you know you had already been self-guiding yourself in Focusing? We’ll shine a fresh light on the process you’ve already been doing, from the point of view of the deep structure.
Class Two: Giving Reminders: You’ll learn a powerful, new way to be supportive as a Focusing partner by offering unobtrusive process invitations.
Class Three: Making Contact: You’ll find out about the stage of Focusing where we make contact with something we feel, and how that enables the rest of the process to go well.
Class Four: Deepening Contact: You’ll discover the secrets of the stage of Focusing where the felt sense comes alive and starts communicating with you.
Class Five: Positive Feelings: You’ll explore the many benefits that come when you fully receive your positive feelings and help others do so too.

By successfully completing this course, students will have:

  • more options for each stage of the Focusing process: more ways of starting and deepening your inner connection
  • a clear understanding of the stages of Focusing and how a blockage at one stage probably means we need to go back to the stage before
  • more ways to support positive life energy in yourself and your Focusing partners
  • how to give graceful and unobtrusive “reminders” so the Focuser doesn’t have to do it all alone

Level Four:

Level Four is about helping with the tough places – inner critics, doubts, feeling too much or too little. Greatly enhance your partnership skills and your own Focusing too.

We learn how to facilitate Focusing through all kinds of blocks: inner critics, doubts, sleepiness, distractions. As we learn how to be present for this in our partners, we also learn how to deepen the process for ourselves.

Course Syllabus and Learning Objectives

Level Four Course Lessons:

Class One: Overwhelming Emotion: Getting flooded or taken over by emotions is a big challenge to successful Focusing. You’ll find out how to support yourself or another person in being bigger than your emotional states.
Class Two: Fear and Impatience: You’ll discover that our feelings about our feelings often block our Focusing, and how to shift that.
Class Three: The Inner Critic: You’ll learn powerful tools for turning around inner critical voices in yourself and other people.
Class Four: Feeling Nothing, Getting Sleepy & Other Distractions: You’ll find out how to help yourself or another person do Focusing when it seems that “nothing” is there.
Class Five: Four Modalities for Focusing: You’ll learn about four different “avenues” for entering Focusing — body, emotion, imagery, or story — and the ways of facilitating each one.

By successfully completing this course, students will have:

  • powerful language and attitudes for helping yourself and others shift your experience of an “inner criticizing process” that says things like, “You’re hopeless” and “This will never work.”
  • more ways to help yourself (or a partner) when you are feeling overwhelmed by strong emotional states
  • at least three different ways to support a process where it seems that “nothing” is coming
  • a wider understanding of the concept of “body” and what makes our bodies so wise
  • how to let go of “rules” and still do Focusing — staying true to what is essential

What Our Students Have to Say

  • Jill B.
"The way Inner Relationship Focusing is taught has an intense clarity about it. The whole process is about being open to the unexpected and unplanned which can, and will, move us forward if we are open to it. What I've learned has fed into my teaching, the way I work with others, and how I live my life. After completing Level One, everything is more interesting than it was before. Life was never dull, but relationships are now an inexhaustible source of self-knowledge. I always knew that and was taught that, but the practice of Focusing shows it to be a reality. I have an increasing circle of Focusing friends and, paradoxically, a growing sense of detachment as well as one of deepening participation in everything."
  • Taj
"There IS something worthwhile that can be done to ease people's suffering. Something that transforms the very fabric where people are stuck in their lives. It's Focusing and it gives me practical hope for a better world."
  • -Roy Gould, psychotherapist and life coach, New Brunswick, Canada
RoyGould“After just two courses of Focusing training I’ve discovered things about myself I’m really excited about, and I’m started to be able to do things to move forward that I’ve always wanted to do. I grew up as a little boy feeling anxious, waking up in the mornings not sure what I could count on in the world. What I’ve noticed from the Focusing training is, now I can be with that aspect of myself that feels anxious. I can be with it like an old friend. I have to say that the decision to take this course ranks up there with the best decisions in my life.”
  • Bob Sheeler, Physician, Rochester, MN
    Bob Sheeler, Physician, Rochester, MN

"Lucinda is warm and delightful, a deep and wholehearted person who brings considerable breadth and depth of skill to Focusing.

She blends this very broad knowledge of Focusing with an intuitive and nurturing teaching approach that is very welcoming to her students."
  • Michaela Jerusalem, Psychotherapist, MBA and Mediator, Aachen, Germany
Michaela Jerusalem, Psychotherapist, MBA & Mediator, Aachen, Germany

"As my approach is Rogerian, I am convinced that people have a great ability to know what is the best for them and that they are the experts in their lives. In Focusing, I have found for myself "The Something" that I have been looking for so long. Focusing is such a great gift to open and deepen the relationship to and with my inner body. Focusing opens deep hidden inner doors and lets new light shine on buried resources. I believe we can only understand ourselves as a whole in the synthesis of body and mind. Focusing is such a valuable method because I can apply it to myself as an empowered Focuser, as well as to my clients. I am very grateful to learn it step by step through the Focusing Resources Levels courses."

  • Jonathan Brown, Counselor and Musician, Santa Rosa, CA
Jonathan Brown, Counselor and Musician, Santa Rosa, CA "Lucinda teaches with great clarity, patience, compassion, and excellence. I am cultivating a very solid foundation for my Focusing skills thanks what I have learned in Level One. I feel grateful to have had such an initiation into this lifelong practice and deeply appreciate Lucinda as my first Focusing teacher."

More Questions? We’ve Got Your Answers…

How do online courses work?

All you need is a phone, tablet, or computer and a comfortable place to sit! We use Zoom, an online video conference platform, to connect you to other students and the teacher.

Before the class starts you will receive a Zoom link to use each time the class meets. You can join us via your camera-equipped computer, tablet, or smart phone. Prefer not to be on video? You can turn off your camera. Don’t want to call via computer? You can call in by phone.

Zoom is free and easy to use. You will be able to sign on in advance to make sure you can access it, but we’ve had very few problems with it. Students also receive access to a private webpage where course materials can be found.

Why such a big deal to learn something so simple?

Because Focusing is a really different way of relating to ourselves, that goes counter to most of the messages around us. We are told how to feel, or to “get over” how we feel, and we are never ever taught about the body felt sense that is the real way through our difficulties.

Why do you feel so stuck? Why do feel like you’ve tried everything and nothing has worked? Why do you go around in circles, repeating what hasn’t worked, feeling the same emotions, and no farther along than before?

It’s not that there’s something wrong with you. I really want you to hear that! So I’m going to say it again.

It’s not that there’s something wrong with you, it’s that the whole way our modern culture is set up leaves us cut off from our bodies and our source of wisdom. And if you suffered traumatic experiences or came from a dysfunctional family (like I did), that makes it even harder to stay in touch with yourself.

Is this therapy? Coaching? Meditation? Positive visualization?

Focusing isn’t any of those things…. But it has similarities to each of them. (And can be used with those other methods to enhance their effects.)

As in therapy or coaching, you can get positive change on deeply held, long term issues, as well as releasing blocks to taking practical action. But unlike therapy or coaching, you do Focusing on your own or with partners in a free exchange. You learn a way of being that you have with you at all times, and once you learn it, it costs you nothing more.

As in meditation, Focusing has an essential quality of acceptance, and you can find greater inner peace and detachment from stressful emotional states or thoughts. But unlike meditation, Focusing is more engaged, practical, issue-oriented – being about a particular life situation.

As in positive self-talk or visualization, you can access the very best of your potential for moving forward with your life without getting stuck in negative emotions. But unlike positive self-talk or visualization, Focusing is grounded in your whole self, inclusive of all your feeling states, so you aren’t leaving out aspects of yourself that can return in a backlash later.

Do I need to be there every week?

Please plan to attend all 5 class sessions for the full time of the meeting. Missing one class is acceptable. (We know from years of experience with teaching Focusing that missing more than one class is just too many.) If you miss more than one class, you’ll need to repeat the Level in order to move on to subsequent Levels. Please note, missing more than 20 minutes of class counts as an absence.

What's included in my course fee?

  • Five two to two-and-a-half-hour meetings for a total of 10 – 12.5 hours of class time depending on the Level.
  • One individual Focusing session (50 minutes) with the course instructor for Level One ONLY. (Value: $160.)
  • Your own copy of The Focusing Student’s and Companion’s Manual, provided as a PDF file. The entire manual is now available as one easy download from the private class webpage, accessible to you anywhere you are!
  • Unique “Exercise Sheets” for every paired class exercise so you know exactly what to do to make the exercises most effective for yourself and your partner. (We innovated these Exercise Sheets and they really work.)
  • Up to one hour of Focusing partnership, in between class meetings each week, to further develop your Focusing skills.
  • A class roster with contact information so you can connect with your assigned partners each week to practice the skills you’re learning during class.
  • Access to recordings of every class, usually by the next day and up to 30 days after the end of the class, so you’ll be able to listen again to anything you want to hear twice – or over and over again.
  • A private web page where you can access homework, recordings, and other important class information from any web browser.

What if I need to cancel my registration or move to another date and time?
