Course Information

About the Course

Each evening in the Zen monastery where I practiced, we chanted, “Life and death are the Great Matter; do not waste time.” In this course we will explore the profound opportunity for transformation that can open for us as we consider our own death, care for loved ones in the process, or travel grief in its aftermath. Using the lens of Focusing, we illuminate our own way along this path of intimate discovery.

What We Will Be Doing

This course can help you live a fuller life by acknowledging death as a part of the voyage. There will be space to explore your own attitudes, beliefs and wonderings about death, ways to support and communicate with those at the end of life, and get in touch with your own timing and process of grief.

Exercises done in a Focusing or contemplative context will include finding your way to be with one who is dying, increasing your capacity to be with unknowing, journaling around what conditions would support you at the time of death, considering quality of life issues and exploring aspects of grief in your own life.

You will:

  • Learn to value the tremendous offering of just “showing up” for those in end stages
  • Discover ways to use what you know from Focusing to communicate with people with dementia, or who are unable to speak
  • Recognize what is here in this moment of life to support your grieving
  • Share poetry, imagery and music that helps you tap your inner wisdom in navigating the threshold space of dying and grief
  • Appreciate freshly this gift of life
