“Should I follow the urge to move and let my body do the stretching and shaking?”

What if you have a burst of energy when you’re Focusing, and you want to move? Read on…

When I do Focusing, often it feels that a sudden burst of energy has released and it does not feel very comfortable. There is a very strong urge to move my body, to stretch my arms and legs, twist my core. My question is, while I’m Focusing, if I have a very strong urge to move my body, should I just say hello to that urge and be with the urge without acting on it? Or should I follow the urge and let the body do the stretching, shaking, moving?

I am asking this question because several times I’ve heard you say that we don’t need to act, we just have to be with the felt sense.

Dear Dhruv:

Oh, I don’t think one needs to hold still to do Focusing!

The urge to move — and especially the urge to shake — can be an important and natural part of the healing process.

The key is to move awarely… to let the movement come, and then afterward sense what difference it made, to move like that.

Check in with the body feeling now… did the movement feel satisfying? Is there still an uncomfortable feeling, or did that shift?

The movement might be the precise next step of life that your body needs!

If you move as your body wants to move, and then check in how your body feels now, you will find out everything you need to know about moving and Focusing.
