What if a part of you wants you to do something, like rest? Read on…

Sometimes when I approach a part of me that I’m sensing, I find that part wants me to do a specific thing like rest more or actually (don’t laugh) color!! Like coloring in a book.
Is this okay? Is the feeling trying to control me? What are your thoughts please?
Dear Dianna:
Sometimes, in Focusing and in life, we encounter “parts,” which are aspects of self that have strategies based on past hurt and blockage, and have a narrowed view of life. They don’t see a big picture.
But parts are not the only thing we can feel. We can also feel our own needs, our own longings, our own intentions.
Frankly, the wish for more rest doesn’t sound like a part to me. The wish to drive on, past the need for rest, and work harder and harder… that sounds like a part.
Based on my experience, the need to rest is from your own self, your body, your inner knowing of what is right and what you need.
And that is not a part. I’d say the same thing about the wish to color.
Here is what I’d suggest: Try saying the words, “I have a need to rest.” Or, “I have a wish to color.” And see if that feels more right to you than that these are parts of you that are trying to control you.
When you remember that you yourself can have intentions and plans and wishes, and not everything is a part… then I think everything becomes more clear. And you find yourself taking actions that nurture you without worrying where they are coming from.
