About the Course

Focusing-Oriented Therapists:

FOT is a powerful approach that gives us therapists the tools to enter into and be fully present with our clients’ experiencing. Yet with many of our clients, eliciting and being fully present to their experience, as healing as that can be, doesn’t feel quite like enough. It’s important to integrate this fine-tuned moment-to-moment sensing of our clients with a clinical understanding of the common themes and dynamics of the issues they’ve sought our help with, and how those themes and dynamics affect the way they relate to us and to themselves, as well as the way they perceive and receive what we offer in the session.

What We’ll Be Doing

This course will offer specific and practical information on applying FOT with specific populations and client issues, and integrating the work with some of the cutting edge thinking emerging from the attachment, cognitive, and emotion-focused modalities.

Issues discussed will include:

  • Trauma and Abuse
  • Eating Disorders and Body Image Issues
  • Couples Therapy
  • Depression and Anxiety
  • Specific applications in working with men and women

We will also discuss:

  • The vital importance of shame and attachment in the therapeutic process
  • How to recognize red flags and warning signals
  • How to work with recurring themes and long standing issues in ongoing therapy
  • Integrating the cutting edge treatment modality of EFT into your work with couples
  • When to recognize when adjuncts to psychotherapy are needed
  • How to take care of yourself as a therapist when working with difficult clients

How Online Courses Work

We use Zoom, an online video conference platform, to connect you to other students and the teacher. Before the class starts you will receive a Zoom link to use each time the class meets. You can join us via your camera-equipped computer, tablet, or smart phone. Prefer not to be on video? You can turn off your camera. Don’t want to call via computer? You can call in by phone. Zoom is free and easy to use. You will be able to sign on in advance to make sure you can access it, but we’ve had very few problems with it. Students also receive access to a private webpage where course materials can be found.
