Are you lonely

“When everyone is talking about love it can awaken something in us that feels deeply alone… and that can be painful.”

Dear Readers:

For Valentine’s Day I want to talk to you about love.

As the song says, it’s what the world needs now. We all have deep needs for connection and acceptance. Love heals… and heaven knows we need that.

Grumpy

But when everyone is talking about love it can awaken something in us that feels deeply alone… and that can be painful.

This could be true even if you are in a committed relationship. This doesn’t mean there is anything wrong with your relationship with the other person. But there might be something needed in your relationship with yourself.

Even painful feelings are worth feeling… if you do it with compassion.

When you turn with compassion toward your painful feelings of loneliness, and allow them to be as they are, two things can happen. And they are both important.

  1. You cease to struggle within yourself. What is here can be felt. It’s not too much for you. You become the one who can be kind to your own hurt places inside. That is remarkable.
  2. In the calm arms of your Presence, the feeling can change… offering you insights as it does so.

So pause and say “Something in me is lonely”… and sense whether that is true.

If it feels true, then you might ask that part of you: “What are you really lonely for?” And then wait.

You might even find that the person that part is longing for… is you.
