Focusing Tip #632 – “I keep on gaining weight…”
Do you have the urge to over-indulge in food or drink? Especially when you are stressed? Read on…
A Reader writes:
I eat when I’m stressed, and I know I shouldn’t, but there are just so many stresses these days, and I find myself snacking on and on after I promised I wouldn’t. I keep gaining weight, and it feels out of control. I know there is this self-indulging part of me but I don’t know how to get it under control.
It’s great that you have already recognized there is a “self-indulging” part of you.
Now I invite you to recognize that there is also a part of you desperate to control it.
Real change in this frustrating pattern is going to involve being Self-in-Presence, which means you will say Hello to both of these parts without being identified with either one. Each part is trying to help you!
And when you listen to each part for its deeper wants and needs, the whole thing can start to shift.
You’ll probably start with the part of you that wants to get this under control. It’s probably quite worried and feeling a bit helpless. You probably won’t be feeling it in your body, but perhaps in the air around your head. You can still feel its worry and frustration… and ask it what it is not wanting to happen to you.
When that part feels heard and starts to calm down, you’ll be able to turn your attention to the part that does the indulging. There is something it too is not wanting… perhaps that you would feel your feelings of being stressed… and maybe there are other feelings underneath.
As Self-in-Presence you’ll be able to acknowledge the “wanting to control” part, the “wanting to indulge” part, AND the feelings underneath. And this whole thing can shift.
I do have an on-demand course that goes into depth on working with the Urge to Indulge. More on that here.
