“What do I pay attention to, to make a decision…?”

Are you faced with two alternatives, and you want Focusing to help you decide? Read on…

How do I go about a focusing process of deciding between two (job) options. What do I have to pay attention to?

Dear Sibille:

Such a nice way you phrased your question! “What do I have to pay attention to?”

First, I’d pay attention to how you feel about having the decision. Heavy? Excited? Uneasy? After all, who said that those were the only two choices? Maybe there are three options: (1) Job A, (2) Job B, (3) something else.

Second, try offering yourself this sentence that I learned from Helene Brenner: “This much I do know…

Like, “I don’t know whether to choose A or B, but this much I do know…” And sense what comes there.

Maybe: “This much I do know, whichever job I take needs to be near the bus line.” Or: “This much I do know, whichever job I take needs to have flexible hours.”

Finally, try on each option. Imagine yourself in Job A, and ask your body how that feels. Take your time.

Now imagine yourself in Job B, and ask your body how that feels. If one alternative feels light and expansive, and the other feels heavy and oppressive, I think you’ve got your answer.

Important: You might not get a Yes or No answer. There are many other possibilities. You might realize you need more information. You might realize there is someone you can ask. In your Focusing, you might sense the rightness of finding out more… and that would be a great outcome!
