Are you being held back by an undermining part of you? Read on…
A Reader writes:
I’m trying to get past procrastination and accomplish the goals I’ve set. But I keep hearing a part telling me I’m not good enough. What do you say to a part like that?
Dear Reader:
Good for you for wanting to accomplish your goals. I’m all for that!
So you have a part that procrastinates and you have a part that tells you that you’re not good enough.
It’s great that you’ve identified those. I can say that they are pretty typical when people are wanting to accomplish and do more. (And to be more!)
What both those parts need from you is your compassionate, listening presence. But with a critical part, that says “You’re not good enough” as if it’s undeniably true, we need a something more than just listening.
After all, saying to it, “I hear you saying I’m not good enough,” doesn’t really help, does it?
So here’s the key: you’ll make a guess that it is worried, and that it is talking to you that way because of how worried it is.
“Might you be worried about something? Might you be worried about what will happen if I try?”
Making a change in your life and accomplishing goals can push against the fear and worries of parts of us whose job it is to keep us safe.
You don’t have to be worried or afraid — you can be a compassionate listener to worried and scared parts of you, and still go for your goals.
