Focusing Tip #931 – Feeling Numb – “I don’t feel anything.”

A serene winter scene with fog and frosty vegetation in Boise, Idaho.

“What if we feel numb?”

What if you want to feel in your body, but your body feels nothing? Read on…

A Reader writes:

What if we don’t feel anything? What if we feel numb? Every time I tune in to my feeling my body sense is always the same….empty, numb.

Dear Reader:

What a great question! I love that you are asking this, because this was my experience when I first tried to do Focusing, 53 years ago.

“I don’t know what you mean, my body feels nothing!”

What I didn’t realize then is that I wasn’t feeling nothing. I just wasn’t feeling what I thought I was supposed to feel.

I thought I was supposed to be feeling something interesting, something meaningful. Something that would “talk” to me.

I didn’t know that I needed to start by simply accepting whatever was there. What is actually there, to be felt, is always your starting place.

So your body feels empty and numb. That’s where you start!

Now sense whether you can feel that empty and numb feeling the same in your throat vs. your chest… or if it’s a little different. Try that also with your chest and your stomach. The same “empty, numb” feeling? Or a little different?

Another thing I wish someone had told me: Maybe something is hiding…

The body feeling of empty and numb might be like a seemingly empty room that someone is hiding in. See if it feels that way… or some other way.

Keep going! You can do it! Your body is already speaking to you. You just need to learn its language!
