What if you have a sense that something terrible is going to happen? Read on…

Paul writes:

I’ve been practicing Focusing for a few years now and there’s one theme that I find nearly impossible to stay with. There are moments when I experience unreal fear: there might be an ominous presence or a sense that something terrible is going to happen.

My whole body feels terrified, and there doesn’t seem to be anything else but fear. It literally feels like my life is at stake – there’s nothing safe and nothing to hold on to.

Dear Paul:

I believe that what is happening in those moments of “unreal fear” is that a younger part of you is showing you what its experience has been like.

This kind of very young part is not able to communicate in words or even images, so what it uses to communicate is your whole body.

The tip is that even though it feels like all of you, you can still have a relationship from Self-in-Presence with that younger part of you by saying to it gently, “I know you are there, and I feel what you’re showing me.” And then stay with it, consciously choosing to continue to feel the feeling as a way of being in relationship with that younger part of you.

I know this is not easy… but it will help if you understand what is probably going on.

This is what it went through and, in a very real sense, it is still going through it.

So you can also say, “I get how awful it is, what you were and are going through. And I am here with you.”

This may not make a difference at once, but stay with it. It will make a difference in time.
