Focusing Tip #634 – “I can’t tell what gives my life meaning.”

Do people tell you that you’re supposed to be able to feel what gives your life meaning, but you can’t feel it? Read on…

A Reader writes:

I finished school, but now I’ve got no idea what to do. My mother knows some Focusing, and she is saying I can feel what I am meant to do, or what gives my life meaning, but I don’t. I can’t get in touch with any felt sense about these questions. I feel stuck.

Dear Reader:

I’m grateful that you wrote, and I have a lot of sympathy. It can be hard to be a young person these days, with so many pressures. It’s great that your mother knows Focusing… but the idea that you should be able to get a felt sense of what gives your life meaning can feel like just another pressure, can’t it?

There is good news! You probably are getting a felt sense… but felt senses are often hard to feel when we have loud inner and outer voices telling us what we should feel.

Rather than putting pressure on yourself to feel what is right for your life, how about asking yourself what you know about what isn’t right? Often, negatives are easier to feel than positives.

Give yourself permission to say, “I don’t know what I want… but here are some things I know that I DON’T want…”

That can get the process moving and will probably feel good in itself!

I made a video I think you’d enjoy where I give help with the obstacles to knowing what we want… and taking action on the big dream.

To you… and everyone in a similar situation… I wish you well! Keep going!
