When I start Focusing I will start with one part but immediately a lot of other parts will be jumping up and asking for immediate attention. Often I get overwhelmed trying to care for all the different parts. Is there something I can do about this?

Dear Linda:

Yes, there is definitely something you can do! We call it “Cultivating Self-in-Presence.”

As you probably know, Self-in-Presence is your ability to be your larger Self, and to hold a large, compassionate space for all of your parts.

You do not however have to care for your parts! You are simply the “space where they can be as they are.”

When you feel the presence of a part, you say Hello to it. If another part clamors in, you say Hello to that too. You can create a sentence that acknowledges all the parts you are aware of, like this:

“I am sensing something in me that feels anxious AND I am sensing something in me that wants to figure out how it can stop feeling anxious AND I am sensing something in me that just wants to go to sleep…”

You can have as long a sentence as you need… and as many AND’s as you need.

Don’t forget to add the part of you that is getting overwhelmed by all the parts! (Yes, that is a part too.)

But none of those parts do you have to “care for.” You have already made a huge difference for them just by showing up as Self-in-Presence and not just being another part trying to fix, solve, or react! Now all you need to do is to sense which one needs the first turn to be heard for how it feels… and hear it.

There is more… but that’s a very good start!
