What if you find a part in you that is mute? Read on…

Last night waking up in the wee hour of 2:00 AM I was noticing a part that appears as mute, perhaps it’s pre-verbal, or in a freeze state? I seem to recall you saying that a part like that can reveal itself as it gains more trust.
What might muteness imply? Could it come to speak in time?
Dear Jewelle:
Many parts simply do not talk. Speaking is not how they communicate. But they do communicate richly in other ways.
Think of a dog or a cat. It’s not mute. It’s just a creature that doesn’t communicate through words.
Or maybe what you felt at 2:00 AM was a part that was mute, in the sense that it wished it could speak but was somehow unable to.
In either case, the important thing is that there are so many avenues of communication still open. (1) You can sense how it feels, the mood it’s in. (2) It could show you images. (3) It may use gestures to communicate, like shaking in fear or punching a fist in anger.
Yes, it’s possible that it’s a part that doesn’t trust you enough to reveal itself. That will be something you can sense about it, as you stay with it empathically.
(And if you do find it’s a part that’s not trusting you right now, you might reassure it that it’s OK not to trust.)
Your empathic presence, your willingness to be in contact and keep it company, is the most important thing, in any case. From your simply sensing how it is, all else will be revealed in time.
