Focusing Tip #953 – IRF + Anxiety – “How can I transform this worried part of me?”

A young man feeling stressed and anxious while sitting outdoors in a park setting.

“Often it’s just trying to prepare me for the worst possible outcome….”

Do you have a part that keeps preparing you for scary negative futures? Read on…

I have a part I call the worrier that I hear from all too frequently. It seems to want to predict the future and prepare me for it. I do know it’s caring about me but often it’s just trying to prepare me for the worst possible outcome.

What do you think is the best way to relate to this possibly over caring part? If I am frustrated and angry with the part does that interfere with my transforming the part?

Dear Charles:

Good question! Simple answer: Yes.

Yes, it won’t work to come from a frustrated and angry place when you spend time listening to your “worrier.”

And there’s an easy thing to do about that. You say Hello to “something in you” that is feeling frustrated and angry with this part that keeps imagining disastrous futures.

Hello to the part itself, hello to another part of you that’s frustrated with it. “And both are there.”

Now you’re in a good position to listen kindly to either one of them, listening for what they are trying to protect you from and what they are trying to help you to feel… and letting them know you hear that.

And by the way, you will not be transforming those parts. What you transform is your relationship with them… by being present, curious, and empathic.

Yes, they’ll transform. But not because they have to.

Inner relationship changes everything!
