Focusing Tip #979 – “I want to focus on an important issue but I just feel calm”

A woman with curly hair meditating indoors with eyes closed. Calm and serene setting.

“I tried to focus on it but there was just blankness and calmness….”

Do you want to evoke a body sense about something so you can do Focusing with it? Read on…

I wanted to focus on an important issue (a pattern I want to dissolve). I tried to focus on this issue and there was just blankness and calmness.

Dear Monique:

Some people have body feelings easily as soon as they think about a challenging issue.

But others (like me, actually) need to give the body a little more help to stimulate or bring up the feeling response, even to something important.

If you have a Focusing partner, you could start the session by talking a bit to your Focusing partner about this pattern you want to change. (Of course saying only what you feel comfortable saying.) Or if you’re Focusing alone, speak a bit about it out loud.

Picture yourself in the situation where the pattern occurs. Remember how it felt the last time it happened.

And then if you still feel nothing, try saying in your body, “I am fine about that happening. It doesn’t bother me at all.”

And let a feeling come up to contradict what you are saying.

I remember a time in the early days, I was going through a lot but my body felt “fine.” My Focusing partner, who was a friend, said to me, “Does it still feel fine when you ask it how your life is going?”

Ooof! Suddenly I had a strong body sense… and I was really grateful!
