Is Focusing just a method for people dealing with difficult issues? Read on…

I see examples of people using Focusing to get over blocks, or to untangle “tangles,” or to heal trauma states from childhood. But I’m not feeling very blocked or tangled, and I’m still curious about doing Focusing.

Can Focusing be used for stuff that isn’t perceived as a problem?

Dear Reader:

I’m so glad you asked! It’s exciting and touching that Focusing can help with releasing blocks or resolving traumatic stoppages. But those are definitely not its only uses.

In fact, my friends and I use Focusing all the time for things that are not problems, and I’d love to give you some examples.

If you’re doing something creative, Focusing can help you sense the next steps in your creative project. I have a friend who co-created a beautiful arboretum with no training whatsoever in garden design. She just walked on her land and sensed what needed to be planted in each place… using Focusing.

If you’re making a decision about where to take your vacation or even what to get a friend as a present, Focusing can help! Getting presents for people has become much easier for me since I started using my felt sense. Even if I don’t know yet what to get them, I often get a feeling about what store to go to! And sure enough, there’s something perfect there.

Group decision-making is another example. If you’re part of a committee or a work group or a family needing to make a decision together, Focusing can help you sense when a proposal doesn’t feel quite right yet — and even articulate what would be more right.

I share even more examples in my article: “Ten Ways to Use Focusing in Daily Life.”

Whether you’re using it to resolve blocks or sense what present to give, Focusing lets you tune in to an inner knowing that is wider — and wiser — than your conscious mind alone.
