What People Are Saying

“I would have been a better actor sooner, if I had learned Focusing. As a director, Focusing helps me many ways. It helps with the process of thinking, writing and working with a wide range of creative people, engaged in the collective creative process of making a film.”

– David Battistella, filmmaker, Florence, Italy

Course Information

About the Course

In this course you will develop your capacity to listen to “an unfinished poem’s silence,” as Gene Gendlin says.  Through exercises, both alone and with a partner,  discussion and engagement with your own creative endeavor, you’ll come to appreciate the way your wellspring of knowing already carries the implicit form of your creation.

One of the key pieces of this course will be a practice that I’ve used in many disciplines including music, fiber art, and writing. This is a commitment to a daily postcard exchange with a partner with some creative expression on it. If I’m writing, I may send along a haiku, if it’s music, I might even write out a piece of a tune, visual art or any kind could be a sketch, a motif, a print. If I’m working on something more like an application, it might be a sort of journal entry around what’s got my attention in the moment—something wanting to see the light of day for further illumination.

Along with this ongoing practice throughout the course, we’ll explore ways to “invite the Muse” more readily through our felt sense of what’s wanting to be created.

The stimulation of being among other creative types is delicious. We can brainstorm ideas with others and have contemplative-like sessions to grow our knowing of what’s already here waiting to be expressed.

We’ll explore Csikszentmihalyi’s concept of Flow and how that relates to creativity. Learn to recognize when you need more structure….or less! Sense at what stage feedback is helpful to you and how to ask for what you need.

What We Will Be Doing

  • Tuning into our own unique way to be fully creative—what supports us, what gets in the way, finding the balance between structure and chaos
  • Tapping our ‘dream worlds’ and intuition for source material
  • Developing our capacity of staying with the intricacy of what wants to  be expressed—as Gendlin says, “Everything and anything is lived by our bodies in an intricate way that we could open and enter”
  • Entering into “flow” where we’re completely engaged in our activity for its own sake
  • Sharing and playing in the crossings of inspiration, spirituality and creativity

About the Teacher

Jan Hodgman:

Jan Hodgman, M.A. is a Focusing trainer and Zen priest with eight years of monastic experience. Prior to her monastic life, she was a professional musician in a number of groups including The Wild Rose String Band, Cour des Miracles and Sheer Audacity.

Upon returning to the US from her time in a Japanese monastery she entered a Returning Scholars program at University of Chicago where she attended classes in Theory Construction (later to become “Thinking at the Edge”) by Eugene Gendlin, Ph. D., developer of Focusing,  and also a course in creativity by Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, author of Flow. The synergy of these two studies continues to inspire her in her work as a writer, Radiant Mind facilitator, a nondual coach, a developer of courses and a fiber artist.

She loves helping create community around any endeavor that brings us more effortless ease, happiness and a deep sense of living our lives fully.
